How Voting Works in Colorado
-
Colorado is a universal vote-by-mail state. Every active registered voter is automatically mailed a ballot before each election — no request or application needed. You can return your ballot by mail, drop box, or in person at a Voter Service and Polling Center (VSPC). You can also choose to vote entirely in person at a VSPC if you prefer.
-
Mail ballots are sent to the address on file with your county clerk and recorder approximately 3–4 weeks before Election Day. Verify and update your mailing address at GoVoteColorado.gov.
-
To sign up to track your ballot from mailing through acceptance, use BallotTrax.
-
All ballots must be received by your county clerk and recorder no later than 7:00 p.m. on Election Day, November 3, 2026. Postmarks do not count — the ballot must be physically in hand at the county office by close of polls.
-
If you do not receive your ballot, made a mistake, or lost it, contact your county clerk and recorder to request a replacement, or visit any Voter Service and Polling Center in your county to vote in person.
-
Voter Registration
-
Colorado has Automatic Voter Registration. When you interact with certain state agencies (such as the DMV), your information is used to register you automatically. You'll receive a notice and have 20 days to decline or affiliate with a party.
-
Registration deadlines to receive your ballot by mail:
-
Online: Through Monday, October 26, 2026.
-
By mail or at a state agency / DMV office: Through October 26, 2026.
-
Same-day registration is available. If you miss the mail-ballot deadline, you can register and vote in person at a Voter Service and Polling Center in your county through 7:00 p.m. on Election Day.
-
Voting in Person
All Colorado voters may choose to vote in person at a Voter Service and Polling Center (VSPC) in their county instead of — or in addition to — returning their mail ballot. VSPCs offer the full range of election services in one location.
-
VSPCs are open during the weeks leading up to the election and through Election Day. Find your nearest VSPC and its hours at GoVoteColorado.gov.
-
At a VSPC, you can: register to vote or update your registration, receive and vote a ballot in person, drop off your mail ballot, request a replacement ballot, and access accessible voting equipment.
-
On Election Day, VSPCs are open 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. If you are in line by 7:00 p.m., you are allowed to vote.
-
You may vote at any VSPC in your county — you are not limited to a specific location.
-
If you have already returned your mail ballot, you cannot vote at a VSPC (to prevent double voting). If you have not returned it, you may surrender your mail ballot at the VSPC and vote a new ballot in person.
Ballot Drop Boxes
-
Drop boxes are available throughout each county and are open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week leading up to Election Day. They are monitored by video surveillance, and ballots are retrieved regularly by bipartisan teams of election judges.
-
Drop box locations can be found at GoVoteColorado.gov.
-
Ballots deposited in a drop box must be in the box by the time polls close — 7:00 p.m. on Election Day, November 3, 2026 — to be counted.
What You Need to Return Your Ballot
-
Colorado does not require photo ID to vote by mail. Instead, your signature on the return envelope is used to verify your identity — it's matched against your voter registration record.
-
Sign the return envelope when you send back your mail ballot. An unsigned envelope will result in your ballot not being counted unless you cure it in time.
-
First-time voters who registered by mail may be required to provide a copy of their ID with their mail ballot. Your county clerk will include instructions with your ballot if this applies to you.
-
-
If you vote in person at a Voter Service and Polling Center, you must show a valid ID. Acceptable forms include:
-
Colorado driver's license or state ID
-
U.S. passport
-
Employee ID card with photo issued by a Colorado or U.S. government entity
-
Pilot's license issued by the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration
-
U.S. military ID card with photo
-
Medicare or Medicaid card
-
Certified copy of birth certificate
-
Certified U.S. naturalization document
-
Copy of a utility bill, bank statement, government check, paycheck, or government document showing name and address (dated within 60 days)
